Classicism is a living tradition being practiced all around us today. We stand in the present, drawing on the past, as we create the future.
– Alvin Holm, AIA

The Institute of Classical Architecture & Art (ICAA) is the leading nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the practice and appreciation of the classical tradition in architecture and the allied arts. We fulfill this mission through education, publications, awards and advocacy partnering with diverse organizations throughout the region.

Education

ICAA provides a forum and comprehensive educational resource for architects, designers, building professionals and the public across the United States and in Europe offering lectures, exhibitions, walking tours, travel programs and conferences. There are extensive continuing education courses, study tours, seminars and intensive programs for professionals. The ICAA formed the Beaux Arts Atelier (BAA) to provide year-long integrated studies in architecture, history and art. The Institute also acts as a vital curriculum partner with accredited schools such as The University of Colorado at Denver, Boston Architectural College and the University of Miami.

Programs unique to Philadelphia include “It’s a Classic!” for the innovative Design Philadelphia celebration, The Annual Alvin Holm Lecture at the Athenaeum of Philadelphia and the compelling lecture series entitled “Conversations with Philadelphia’s Radical Traditionalists.” We also offer courses in drawing, history and philosophy led by the renown founding member of the organization.

Publications

ICAA publishes an annual journal, The Classicist, and new and reprinted books on classical design through “The Classical America Series in Art and Architecture.” The Forum, a newsletter for members, is published twice a year.

Awards

Through the annual Arthur Ross Awards ceremony, ICAA recognizes excellence by honoring the world wide achievements and contributions of architects, painters, sculptors, artisans, landscape designers, patrons and others in preserving and advancing the classical tradition. The Rieger-Graham Prize and The Alma Schapiro Prize provide opportunities for designers, architects and fine artists to study abroad as affiliated fellows of the American Academy in Rome. Through numerous regional awards programs, chapters across the country highlight exceptional work each year.

Advocacy

ICAA maintains a strong voice in the public domain, championing the continuation of the classical tradition as a vital cultural resource.
